Can essential oils potentially replace antibiotics in the animal feed industry?
A Literature Review
MB 585: Industry Case Studies in Microbial Biotechnology
Fall 2024
In January 2022, the European Union (EU) implemented a law that prohibits the routine use of antibiotics in farmed and domesticated animals. Under this regulation, antibiotics can now only be administered to sick individual animals, not to entire herds. This change prompts the animal feed industry and farmers to seek alternatives that protect animal health without adverse effects on the environment or human health. Essential oils, as natural, organic, and phytogenic compounds, offer a promising solution. With inherent antimicrobial properties and additional benefits such as boosting milk yield, increasing fat content, and promoting lean muscle mass in livestock, essential oils present a potential substitute for antibiotics. My review explores the role of essential oils in animal feed as a replacement for antibiotics and highlights why they may serve as an alternative to traditional antibiotic use in the animal feeding industry.

KnowU: The Future of Non-Invasive Glucose Monitoring?
Technology Summary - A Patent Review
MB 586: Biotechnology Industry Practicum Project II
Spring 2025
KnowLabs, a Seattle-based company, has developed KnowU, a non-invasive glucose monitoring device using radiofrequency (RF) spectroscopy to measure blood glucose without needles or sensors. This technology provides a pain-free, cost-effective alternative to traditional methods, enhancing accessibility and diabetes management. The device processes glucose-specific signals through machine learning algorithms, displaying real-time data on a device or smartphone app.

I proposed a business strategy for KnowLabs to integrate its technology into smart wearables, such as the Apple Watch, to expand market reach. Given Apple’s $37 billion wearables market, capturing even 5% could generate approximately $1.85 billion in revenue. This partnership would enhance the adoption of KnowLabs' technology while leveraging existing market leaders. However, challenges exist in protecting their AI-driven algorithm and negotiating third-party integration.
